The Care and Beyond Barbering Program gives young people with disabilities the opportunity to experience the social and practical side of a real barbershop environment.
Working alongside an experienced barber and mentor, participants can build confidence, practise communication, develop social skills and become more comfortable interacting with others in a relaxed and engaging setting.
Depending on the participant’s interests and goals, experiences may include observing barbering, learning about tools and techniques, practising appropriate skills, interacting with customers and staff, developing workplace behaviours and gaining exposure to what working in a barbershop can look like.
The program is designed around the individual. The focus is not on becoming a barber, but on using a genuine community and workplace environment to support meaningful personal development.
Participants may work towards:
- Greater confidence in social and community environments
- Communication and interpersonal skills
- Building positive relationships and trust
- Following instructions and developing routines
- Personal presentation and self-confidence
- Workplace awareness and appropriate behaviours
- Exploring interests and possible employment pathways
- Greater independence in real-world settings
Rather than practising every skill in a classroom or simulated environment, participants have the opportunity to learn through genuine experiences, conversations and interactions.
The Care and Beyond Oztag Program gives young people with disabilities the opportunity to participate in a structured, social sporting environment while developing skills that extend beyond the field.
Through training, participation and Oztag competitions, participants can work towards greater confidence, communication, teamwork, resilience and community involvement.
The emphasis isn’t simply on sporting ability or winning. Participants are supported to become part of a team, understand their role, communicate with others, follow structure and experience the sense of achievement that comes from participating in something together.
Participants may work towards:
- Confidence and self-belief
- Social interaction and communication
- Teamwork and cooperation
- Community participation
- Following instructions and game structure
- Resilience and managing challenges
- Developing friendships and social connections
- Physical activity and healthy routines
- Leadership and responsibility
- A stronger sense of belonging
For some young people, joining a mainstream sporting environment can feel intimidating. Care and Beyond aims to create a supportive pathway where participants can build confidence, develop skills and experience being part of a team.
Care and Beyond is developing a structured boxing-based program for young people with disabilities who are interested in fitness, movement and personal development.
The program will focus on creating a supportive environment where participants can work towards greater confidence, routine, resilience and self-belief through engaging boxing-inspired activities.
The program is being developed around:
- Confidence and self-belief
- Discipline and positive routines
- Fitness and physical wellbeing
- Focus and perseverance
- Resilience and personal development
- Individual goal progression
